We have completed a hydrographic atlas of the Southern Ocean using all stations from the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) and a carefully screened selection of historical stations.

The Southern Ocean Database (SODB) consists of about 93,000 hydrographic (bottle and ctd) stations south of 25S. The primary source is NODC's World Ocean Atlas 98 (WOA98) and its successor, World Ocean Database 2001 (WOD01), which account for about 78,000 stations. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) provided about 10,000 stations. The remaining 5,000 stations came directly from investigators. Each station was individually quality controlled by comparison to nearby WOCE stations. Although each sample retains the original data value we have assigned all of the quality flags.

SODB is available to the public as a subset of non-proprietary data flagged as acceptable by us. Download SODB.

All cleaned station data were used to create property fields with a high spatial resolution (~24 km) through the application of statistical mapping techniques customized to the Southern Ocean.

Grids are available to the public also. Download GRIDS.
